Sensory Integrative Dysfunction is the brain's inability to correctly process information brought in by the senses and respond to them appropriately. Some signs are: overly sensitive to sights, sounds, movements or touch, decreased awareness of surroundings, impulsive lack of self control, inability to unwind or calm self, difficulty transitioning from one situation to another, physical clumsiness or apparent carelessness. These are just a few!
Imagine...
You could see obstacles in your way but could not make you body move the direction you wanted it to, to avoid them.
You felt like someone gave you a shot of novacain in your backside so you couldn't feel if you were sitting in the middle of your chair and you fell off three times during this training.
You couldn't focus your eyes on me because everything and everyone in the room catches your attention and your eyes just go there instead.
You could only sit here for 15 minutes and then you had to go take a run around the building or do 20 jumping jacks so you could sit for another 10 minutes before your muscles felt like they were going to jump out of your skin.
Again, these are just some examples of what one diagnosed with this may experience.
One of the most frustrating things about SPD is that there has not YET been enough significant, massive, scientific research through controlled studies to quanify, prove or predict the symptoms and life course of this disorder (at least in the eyes of the medical community). Consequently, insurance coverage can be difficult if not impossible to get for this disorder and evaluations and therapy for identification and treatments can be very expensive. Evals can run up to $800.00 and therapy $90.00 per session.
